No hokey cable connectors hanging off a dB connector or anything. I checked the front and back of the Tascam, and it's all there. I think if I were going for a new audio interface, I'd be asking for feedback as well. I'm sort of floored, there's 16 inputs, and 8 out (and balanced at that!). I have a Yamaha 16 in, so I know the feeling of having things just set up without having to switch things out much. Again, just be aware Tascam preamps are ok (better than Berringer, for example), but just be aware, you may want to compare those differences. If the 16 in is definitely what you need, and the Tascam provides that (in actuality at one time) it's quite a good price. Then you might be stuck with 8 in at a time only. Just check also that the Tascam is 16 in, and not 8 switchable between 8 mic/ 8 line ins. Are you mixing live drums in or something? 8 in's is typically sufficient, but I don't know what your recording needs are.Īs you say, 16 is the right number of in's. What about the Onyx Blackbird? That's 8x8, and could be multiple USB In/Out? Yes, you have 8 in though. Then out to mains or buss to an interface. They're very cost effective, excellent quality, and won't break the bank.Īhh, well, One is a mixer, so I thought that might be driving your needs, as in patching, or mixing in numerous ins, and auxes, etc. Plus, you can stack them (for live situations anyway).Īnyway, take your time is probably the best advise I could give, and look into Presonus, Mackie, or Focusrite Saffire. PHONIC HELIX BOARD 18 FIREWIRE DRIVER PLUSPlus with the 8 out, you could address multiple buss outs, along with the stereo outs, and you'd have a lot of flexibility. I know, I don't mean to be upping the cost anti on you, but I think you'd benefit from better preamps, onboard word clock, and overall higher quality. It may be worth looking at a Mackie Onyx Blackbird.Ĩ Onyx mic preamps High-headroom design with ultra-low noise and distortion 16 x 16, 24-bit/96kHz recording/playback Flexible FireWire routing 8 x 8 ADAT I/O for ultimate expandability Onboard word clock I/O for studio and live integration JetPLL jitter-elimination technology Cirrus Logic AD/DA converters with 114dB dynamic range (A-weighted). Looks like you're going to a rack config, like a 2 space, or similar unit. You may want something mixer like along the lines of a Mackie ProFX16v2 Since quality preamps will give you greater headroom when recording, a better signal to noise ratio, and just make your mics even sound more pristine, it's a real consideration. I've always liked Tascam for a lot of things, but mixers have not been a real strong suit with them. The preamps on the mackie are simply better quality than Tascam. Since you need the 8 in, 8 mic, that you were used to with the Phonic Helix, You may want to look into a Mackie 16x2, 4 buss mixer. Claims to have 16 inputs (8 preamp mic plus 8 separate line inputs) which is just what I need. I saw the TASCAM US-16x08 USB listed on Amazon for around $250.
